PRESS RELEASE (18 October 2005)

Transpeak Doubles Up

Passengers are set to get an easier ride thanks to a new-look, improved Derbyshire bus service.

From Monday October 23 2005 the popular transpeak service - which links Nottingham and Manchester via the Peak District - will run every hour instead of two.

The more regular service is a joint initiative between Derbyshire County Council and Heanor-based bus operator trent barton - backed by Government funding. A successful bid by the county council secured £954,000 from the Department for Transport to fund the extended service for three years. After this time it is expected to run commercially.
Leaving hourly from Nottingham, the transpeak service will call at Derby, Belper, Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton and several selected pick up points en route along the A6 corridor. The journey from Buxton to Manchester will run every two hours.

In line with the improved service, the transpeak is also getting a makeover. Three extra easy-access, low floor, environmentally-friendly buses will be branded with new bright green livery featuring places of interest along the route.

Passengers and car drivers are encouraged to use the service to stop off and visit some of the county’s top attractions including the Derwent Valley World Heritage site, Matlock’s Heights of Abraham, Haddon Hall, Bakewell and the spa town of Buxton. Anyone using the transpeak will be able to present their bus ticket and get discounted entry at some of the sights.

Derbyshire County Council leader John Williams said: “The council is proud of its excellent existing public transport network but we are never complacent and are always looking at ways of improving our bus services for local people and visitors.
He added: “The transpeak is already popular yet we are pleased to be involved in a project aimed at delivering an improved service for current passengers and to encourage new passengers to try it out.”

trent barton’s commercial director Ian Morgan said: “This is an exciting step forward for transpeak and the new service could not have been achieved without a partnership approach.”

Timetables listing the revised times and providing other public transport information are available on all transpeak buses and online at www.trentbarton.co.uk as well as from Tourist Information Centres and local libraries along the route of the transpeak.
