PRESS RELEASE (15 January 2009)

Burton shops drive people on to the buses

THERE’S certainly no sign of an economic downturn on the buses between Derby and Burton.

Boosted by the attraction of the shops in the Staffordshire town, the X38 bus service is carrying 30% more passengers than when it was re-launched two years ago.

The buses take just 25 minutes to get from Derby to Burton along the A38 – and that makes them quicker than cars when time spent finding a place to park is taken into account.

Since the spring of 2007, there have four X38 buses each hour during the day on the route.

Sarah Taylor, from bus operator trentbarton, said: “When substantial investment was made in the X38 service, we envisaged that many of our passengers would be going from Burton to Derby for their shopping.

“But it’s really worked out the other way, especially with the popularity of Primark in Burton. The town is becoming an increasingly popular destination for shoppers, and that’s reflected in these increases in passenger numbers.”
