PRESS RELEASE (06 May 2009)

£1.3 million investment in new buses for the nines

THE first buses in a £1.3 million investment in public transport between Mansfield and Derby are to hit the streets.

The 13 new buses will be on the nines service after the May Bank Holiday.

Each is environmentally state-of-the-art in terms of low emissions. As standard, they all have double-glazing, are wheelchair and buggy friendly - and have air conditioning.

All buses come with leather seats and the trentbarton designer interior, creating an environment that would normally be associated with a high street coffee shop.

Improvements are being made to the timetable too when the new buses enter service on Tuesday 5 May:

> Buses will run every 15 minutes from Sutton-in-Ashfield to Mansfield;

> The East Midlands Designer Outlet at junction 28 of the M1 will have a bus every 30 minutes from Sutton-in-Ashfield and Mansfield;

> An extra bus - 9.3 - will run from Ripley fast to Derby every hour on the A38, providing Leabrooks and Somercotes and all stops in Ripley and Marehay with a fast bus to Derby;

> MANGO smart cards, which give a 25% saving on single cash fares using GPS technology, will be able to be used, speeding up boarding times and leading to better timekeeping.

Sarah Taylor, marketing manager of trentbarton, said: “Like most businesses we are being affected by aspects of the recession, but it would be short sighted not to continue the policy of investing in our fleet that has served us so well over more than 20 years.

“Passengers want clean, modern buses in which to travel for work and leisure. We have one of the youngest fleets in Britain, and that position will be strengthened as this major investment in the bus service between Mansfield and Derby shows.”

The new look for the buses on the nines service was produced by Britain's top bus design company.

“Buses are no different from shops and we want to match the standards of retailers, so we have tried to incorporate some of the sought-after ambience and atmosphere of a coffee shop,” said designer Ray Stenning, of Best Impressions.
