| New investment is sign of confidence in Nottingham's economy |
| |
THE first buses in a £1 million investment in the service that links Calverton, Arnold and Nottingham are to hit the streets for the first time.
The trent barton bus company is putting six brand new, state of the art buses with a striking black livery on to the calverton connection service from Sunday 9 August.
The official ribbon-cutting to launch the new buses will be conducted by the Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Suzanne Prew-Smith in Arnold Market Place at 10am on Thursday 6 August.
Each new bus has a designer exterior and interior, with air conditioning, as well as low-emission engines. They all come with leather seats, creating an environment that would normally be associated with a high street coffee shop.
MANGO smart cards, which give a 25% saving on single cash fares using GPS technology, will be able to be used, speeding up boarding times and leading to better timekeeping.
The new buses on calverton connection are part of an overall £6 million investment by trent barton during 2009 and comes despite the economic downturn.
Sarah Taylor, marketing manager of trent barton, said: “Like most businesses we are being affected by aspects of the recession, but it would be short sighted not to continue the policy of investing in our fleet that has served us so well over more than 20 years.
“At a time when cutbacks and downturns are everyday news, trent barton is investing at record levels in a bus fleet that is already known as one of the UK’s most modern. Our record £6m spending to renew almost a fifth of our fleet this year is a direct reflection of our confidence in quality and in the destinations that we serve.
“Passengers want clean, modern buses in which to travel for work and leisure. We have one of the youngest fleets, and that position will be strengthened as this major investment in the bus service between Calverton and Nottingham shows.
“We continue to experience a tough trading year, but the city of Nottingham is emerging as an ever-more vibrant retail and employment centre and we believe that will have a positive influence in attracting new customers and help counter competition from online trading. We will offer an ever-better alternative to the car as a means of reaching the city.”
