A BUS driver from Bulwell who "finds time for a friendly word with just about everyone" and was this year named Driver of the Year by trent barton, has now been chosen as Britain's top driver.
Barry Allitt, who is a driver and team leader on the radcliffe lines service, took top spot as "Best Bus Driver" in the UK Bus Awards competition at a glittering ceremony in London.
He has been with trent barton for three years after running a newsagent near Nottingham Prison for seven years.
Barry said: "This is absolutely fantastic. It was the perfect result, and really nice to be recognised for the job I do.
"I hope that I offer my passengers a good service with a cheerful approach and a word for everyone. If I can make a passenger's day, then it's been a good day."
Jeff Counsell, the managing director of trent barton, said: "We are absolutely thrilled for Barry. It's a tremendous achievement to win this prestigious award. Just superb."
John Owen, chairman of the UK Bus Awards Management Committee, said: "The standard of entries in the Top National Driver contest is very high indeed, and we're hugely impressed by the loyalty and commitment to customer service."
During the bus company's own award process, mystery travellers described 37-year-old Barry as a "superb driver who made every customer feel valued and welcome, but still managed to provide a relaxing, really smooth and punctual ride".
